Palestinian finance minister threatens to quit

Sunday, November 20, 2005 |

Palestinian sources say that Palestinian Authority (PA) Finance Minister Salam Fayyad threatened to resign as a warning to PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas and his Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia. Fayyad’s aides said that Abbas and Qureia have hindered attempts at fiscal reforms in the PA’s financing. Fayyad wants to signal through his resignation threat that he will not tolerate interference in his work. But others officials said that Fayyad is resigning because he intends to run in landmark Palestinian parliamentary elections in January.
