Sharon way ahead in the polls

Thursday, November 24, 2005 |
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's decision to quit his ruling Likud party is paying off. According to opinion polls in the nation’s newspapers, Sharon's new “Forward” party will win big in early elections set for March 28th. The party has gained strength since Sharon announced his departure from the hawkish Likud four days ago. A poll in the “Ma’ariv” daily had Sharon's party winning 34 seats in the 120-member Knesset (parliament), four more than in a poll published Tuesday. The dovish Labor Party would win 26 seats, and the Likud had a pathetic showing with just 13 spots. A poll in Israel’s biggest newspaper “Yediot Ahronot” gave Sharon 33 seats, compared to Labor's 26 and Likud's 13. A poll in the English language “Jerusalem Post” had Sharon winning 32 seats, Labor 26 and Likud 13.
