Rafah border crossing inaugurated

Thursday, November 24, 2005 |

In a deal brokered by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the Palestinians have inaugurated a new border crossing from Gaza into Egypt. The Rafah crossing marks the first time the Palestinians have full control of one of their borders, and it gives them a gateway to the world. The movement of people and goods is expected to a give a boost to the impoverished Gaza economy. Israeli security concerns held up an agreement for months. But as a compromise, European monitors have been deployed to prevent the smuggling of terrorists and weapons.
