More than 1,500 Palestinians crossed into Egypt after the Rafah border was officially opened this weekend by the Palestinian Authority and Egypt. Some crossed to meet relatives, others to visit doctors and some were students. For some Gaza residents, it was their first time crossing the border. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan praised the decision to open the passage and said the opening was the result of an important decision by the Israeli government. For the first time in is history, the PA will exercise almost complete control over a border to another country. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said, “We would not allow Gaza to become a large prison for a million and a half Palestinians.” The European Union is monitoring the border.
