Could bombing have been prevented?

Wednesday, December 07, 2005 |
There's hot debate in Israel about whether this week's suicide bombing in the coastal town of Netanya could have been prevented. The question many Israelis are asking is why four policemen who drew their guns and cornered the 23-year-old Palestinian bomber did not open fire and kill him before he blew himself up. The incident points to the dilemma facing police and soldiers. In the past, innocent Palestinians carrying suspicious bags have been shot and killed. Police and soldiers don't want to live with that, but now they have to live with the fact that they could have saved five innocent lives. The banner headline in Israel’s biggest newspaper “Yediot Ahronot” said, “OUR FAILURE.”
