Palestinians arrest terror suspects

Wednesday, December 07, 2005 |

In a rare move, Palestinian police have arrested 15 low-level Islamic Jihad terrorists in connection with the bombing. Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack, and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas vowed to punish the perpetrators. But “Jerusalem Post” correspondent Matthew Gutman says there's little chance of that. "They [the Palestinian Authority] don't have the strength to send hundreds or even thousands of soldiers or security officers in order to rout out these people,” Gutman told Israel Television. “So what they try to do is as little as they can without getting in trouble." Arresting terrorists would also be unpopular. The last thing Abbas needs is to be perceived by his people as being Israel's policeman.
