Syria, one of Israel’s most hostile enemies, is considering renewing peace negotiations. The British daily The Guardian reported that Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah urged Syrian president Bashar Assad to restart the talks, which broke down in 2000. The move may be part of an attempt to revitalize the 2002 Saudi peace initiative, which called for the Arab world's recognition of Israel in exchange for Israel's return of territories it won in the 1967 war, including the Golan Heights. A senior Arab diplomat told The Guardian at the summit that "Syria would go along with almost anything at this point," to avoid isolation fro the Arab world.
