According to “Newsweek” magazine, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is ready to concede 90 percent of Judea and Samaria and parts of Jerusalem in order to establish a Palestinian state. His rival, Likud candidate Benjamin Netanyahu, seized on the statement, recycling his 1996 campaign slogan “Peres will divide Jerusalem,” replacing Peres with Sharon. Netanyahu beat Shimon Peres in the ’96 race for prime minister. “Sharon's associates are exposing what he has been trying to hide, but that everybody knows: Sharon will divide Jerusalem and return the Palestinians to the 1967 borderline,” Netanyahu said. Sharon denied the report, saying it is “utter nonsense.” “The only plan that Israel will follow is the roadmap, and greater Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel forever,” Sharon said.
