A new poll shows that 49 percent of Israelis support giving up Arab neighborhoods in East Jerusalem as part of a future peace deal with the Palestinians. But 49 percent also oppose the compromise and support Israel's traditional position that the city must remain the undivided capital of the Jewish state. The poll, which appeared in Israel’s biggest newspaper “Yediot Ahronot,” was taken in the wake of a report that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is, for the first time, prepared to relinquish parts of Jerusalem. Sharon denied the report, but 56 percent of those polled believe Sharon would exchange parts of the city for peace, while 37 percent thought he would not.
