PA threatens to nix election if no vote held in Jerusalem

The Palestinian Authority is threatening to cancel its Jan. 25 parliamentary elections if Israel bars Jerusalem Palestinians from voting, a senior Palestinian official said Wednesday. “If the Israelis insist on not allowing us to conduct the elections in Jerusalem, then there will be no elections at all,” Information Minister Nabil Shaath said. A senior Israeli official said that Israel would prevent Palestinians in Jerusalem from voting for fear that the terror group Hamas would receive more votes. In previous elections, Palestinian residents of Jerusalem voted by mail or by going to polling stations in nearby Palestinian suburbs. Meanwhile, the Israeli army has plans to pull out of Palestinian territories to allow greater ease of voting during the elections.
