In a restricted press meeting, few details were released concerning Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s health and current medical status Monday evening. Doctors Haim Lotam and Tamir Ben-Hur announced that Sharon suffered from a mild stroke last week caused by a hole in his heart, which made him unfit to make decisions. The hole measures 1 to 2 millimeters, a birth defect, which affects nearly 15 to 25 percent of the population. In two weeks, Sharon will undergo a catheterization, as doctors will insert a clam shell-shaped clamp on two sides of the hole in his heart. Sharon’s stroke was caused by a blood clot, which restricted the flow of blood to his brain. The upcoming procedure will reduce the risk of another stroke.
