Military Intelligence: 2006 to be a year of escalation

Monday, January 02, 2006 |

Israeli military intelligence is forecasting a pessimistic year ahead with escalations of violence on all of Israel’s fronts: Threats from the north from Hizbollah or global Islamic Jihad operations; from Iran and its nuclear program; and from the Palestinians with more terrorist threats and a continuation of the steady barrage of missiles fired from Gaza. To add to the already dour predictions, a “truce” called between Islamic terrorist factions and Israel for 2005 is over and Palestinian terrorist groups have decided not to extend it. The ceasefire was signed in February during a summit in Egypt. Despite it, Israel reported 2,990 attacks and arrested 160 would-be suicide bombers in 2005.
