Vatican envoy criticizes Israel policy about guarding of holy sites

The Vatican’s legal advisor in Israel harshly criticized Israel’s policy regarding safeguarding Christian holy sites and said the fate of Jerusalem should not be left in the hands of Israel and the Palestinians. David Jaeger said any solution to the status of Jerusalem needs the approval of the international community. He said that contradictions exist in agreements signed between Israel and the Vatican on preserving Christian Holy sites and Israeli laws dating from the British mandate in Palestine. The Israeli government took away the courts’ authority to deal with issues related to lands and funds belonging to the Roman Catholic Church, causing legal disputes that have been dragging in courts for years, the Vatican envoy said.
