Marching to the beat of an Israeli drum

Wednesday, January 11, 2006 |

Israel’s first marching band “March Dondurama” has been performing nationwide from clubs and parties to festivals and street corners. One of their first performances was on a street near the shuk, Jerusalem’s outdoor market. The group was inspired by the Breslav Hassidim, the orthodox group that drives around the city blaring loud music and dancing in the streets (photo) in an attempt to make people happy. So, “March Dondurama” set out to do the same, but with a non-religious twist. Group members include professionals, a career army officer, a film student, biology teacher and a design student. One of the members first tried this in Brooklyn, New York.
