US said to be funding Fatah in Palestinian elections

Monday, January 23, 2006 |
According to a news report, the United States is secretly providing financial support to the Palestinian Authority to strengthen the Fatah party against the terrorist group Hamas in Wednesday’s parliamentary elections. The Washington Post reported yesterday that the US Agency for International Development (USAID) has made available $2 million toward bolstering the image of the PA by indirectly supporting the Fatah movement. Fatah, despite being rife with corruption and tolerant of terrorism, is still a better choice than Hamas as a negotiating partner for Israel. The US money was being used to buy newspaper ads promoting PA events, clean streets, plant trees and provide water and food supplies, among other things, according to the Post. The paper also said the discreet aid to Fatah was being questioned by the Bush administration.
