Livni gets good reception in Cairo

Thursday, February 02, 2006 |
Foreign Tzippi Livni seemed to get a good reception in Cairo in her first official trip abroad as foreign minister. Top Egyptian officials said that Hamas must recognize Israel and stop terrorism, and that there can be no negotiations under fire. Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman said that Hamas's inclusion into a Palestinian government would be dependent on the organization stopping violence, recognizing Israel's right to exist and keeping all previous agreements with Israel. One Egyptian official said Israel’s decision to withhold money it gives to the PA punishes the Palestinian people. Livni denied that Israel was punishing the Palestinian population. “Unfortunately, the Palestinian people chose a terrorist organization to be their leaders,” she said. “At the end of the day there is a need for any new government to stop terrorism, dismantle the terrorist organizations, stop violence, recognize Israel and stop hatred.”
