Settlers protest police violence in Amona evacuation

Monday, February 06, 2006 |
Tens of thousands of demonstrators, mostly religious teenagers, gathered in Jerusalem calling for a government investigation into the alleged excessive use of force by police at the Amona settlement outpost last week which left 200 injured. Most of the protest was directed against Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who was accused of causing a civil war. The demonstration was the largest of its kind since the Gaza Strip evacuation last summer. Attorney-General Menahem Mazuz opposed establishing an inquiry and said that those who thought the police acted with undue force could lodge a complaint, and that their complaints would be investigated. "Everything is transparent," said Mazuz, adding that there were numerous cameras on the scene that filmed the events.
