Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was criticized from both the right and the left, including his own Kadima Party, for suggesting further withdrawals of Jewish neighborhoods from Judea and Samaria. Olmert broadly suggested Israel’s borders should include the Jordan Valley, Gush Etzion, Ma’aleh Adumim, and the Ariel settlement blocs. “We will separate from the majority of the Palestinian population that lives in Judea and Samaria, and it will obligate us to leave territories where Israel is today,” Olmert said. Former Shin Bet (secret services) Chief Avi Dichter, a Kadima colleague, outright rejected any further withdrawals.
