Northern Israeli residents threaten to protest budget cuts

Monday, February 20, 2006 |
Communities in the Galilee region have threatened to launch a protest against the State’s decision to cut defense budgets for the protection of towns along the Lebanese border. The Defense Ministry claimed that the funds were cut because of the greater needs of communities along the Gaza border. The cuts included funds for lighting systems, fences around the communities and other means used to protect against possible terror attacks. Residents are frustrated with what they call a trend of abandonment by the State, which began a month ago when the Israeli army decided to stop guarding seven northern communities.
