Arab nations discuss supporting Hamas despite US opposition

Monday, February 20, 2006 |
Arab League members will meet this week to formulate a plan to send $50 million a month to the Palestinian Authority, despite US admonishment against the influx of foreign aid under the new Hamas leadership. Leaders are scheduled to meet on Monday in Algiers. The money is part of the Arab League budget approved last year before the Hamas victory. A final decision is not expected until leaders meet next week in Khartoum, Sudan. Saudi Arabia and Qatar have already contributed to the Palestinian Authority. However, Palestinians are skeptical that the rest of the Arab world will come through with their financial support.
