Model Aircraft-Show in the Arava Desert

Friday, February 24, 2006 |
On Saturday Ein Yahav, in the middle of the Arava Desert, will be the meeting place for model aircraft lovers as the annual Arava Model Aircraft Show takes off with smoke and thunder.

But this year has a first: Pilots of the “Swiss Aerobatic Group” are taking part. They brought from Switzerland a dozen aircraft from their stock of about 90 in a big truck to the Israeli desert.

“If it wasn’t for this show, we probably would never have come to Israel. It’s a really beautiful and normal country,” said Swiss group chief Peter Hartmann.

Taking part again are pilots from the German Phantom-Staffel Bayern with their F-4-Phantoms. A few Israeli pilots will also show off their expertise with choppers and prop-planes.

The biggest treat is the model of “Fat Albert,” the C-130 Hercules-transport of the US-Navys “Blue Angels” Show team (see picture), the European supersonic jet “Concorde” and the Airbus A340-600. Other Models are the F-9 (US Navy markings) of the Korean war, Pitts 1 and 2, F-5 Tiger and many more.

They filled the blue desert sky with smoke and the air with noise just like real life counterparts do. An amazing experience, which I witnessed Wednesday, while the pilots where test flying their machines. Perhaps next year more nations, like the USA, will take part also?
