Hundreds in Jerusalem honor French Jew killed in Paris

Thursday, March 02, 2006 |
Shedding light on what they call an urgent need for increased Aliyah from France, French Jews gathered in Jerusalem’s Old City to honor Ilan Halimi, the 23-year-old Jew, kidnapped and murdered in a Paris suburb. Organizers said Halimi was in process of making aliyah, but never realized his dream. “Ilan gathered us here so we may think and pray for our people and for the Jews in France who are in peril and do not understand that they must not remain in a hostile country,” said Yosef Zchaka, chairman of the Lehavi association. Hannah Finkelstein, who made aliyah in 1994, said, said, “Like Halimi, we too were young Jews in France. It could have happened to us.” Another protester, Idit, said, “There is terrible anti-Semitism in France; it’s time the French Jews make aliyah.”
