US may support Kadima withdrawal plan

Monday, March 06, 2006 |

Should Kadima win the majority in elections on March 28, Israel will begin ceding more land to the Palestinians and evacuating several more settlements in Judea and Samaria within four years, according to party members. Former Israel Security agency chief Avi Dichter said that coordination for the withdrawal would begin after the elections. The US position officially remains that “all final-status issues should be agreed to between the parties,” according to US Embassy spokesman Stewart Tuttle. But American officials have privately said that the US would not oppose Israeli decisions to cede territory that it no longer felt was strategically necessary to control.
