Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said he is going to freeze funds for construction in settlements in Judea and Samaria and will instead divert the money to underdeveloped areas in Israel such as the Negev. Olmert’s statements came three weeks before the Israeli national elections as an attempt to improve its numbers in the polls since Kadima has dropped in recent weeks. “It's no secret that we won't invest in coming years the same sums we invested in construction and infrastructure development in areas over the Green Line,” Olmert said, referring to Israel's border before the 1967 Six Day War.
