Although Wednesday will mark International Women’s Day, not all Israeli’s will be celebrating. Israel lags 30 years behind the US in workplace equality, according to attorney Tziona Koenig Yair. She commended the Knesset however for passing legislation to create an Equal Opportunities Employment Commission that would fight for gender equality in the workplace and against discrimination. According to the new law, the commission must be set up by the end of 2006. Some people say Israel should be void of such discrimination because women already have full civil rights according to Israel’s Declaration of Independence: Israel "will ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex.” It also states that, “Women will enjoy total and complete equality, equal rights and responsibilities in this country, society and workplace, and in the legal establishment."
