The United States may be Israel’s number one supporter, but the US State Department relayed its criticism of Israel in its annual report on human rights. The report cited violence, corruption and discrimination against disabled, women, and foreign workers, as well as at Israeli-Arabs, while still maintaining that the Israeli government respects the rights of its citizens. Other criticisms included the State’s matrimonial law, run by the Orthodox establishment. Jews cannot marry non Jews in Israel. Any couple desiring to have a civil marriage ceremony or marry someone of another faith must marry abroad. The Palestinian Authority was also criticized for a lack of proper supervision over security forces, allowing excessive violence to be employed by its members.
