The Oasis Casino in Jericho, which once had daily revenues close to $1 million, will be shut down. Hamas announced plans for the casino’s complete closure because gambling does not comply with Moslem Law, which they plan to implement in the Palestinian Authority. In 1999, the casino made a profit of $54 million and 99 percent of its visitors were Israelis. The casino shut down in 2000 when it was used as a terrorist base. It was later refurbished, but never reopened. If Hamas does succeed in implementing Sharia law, alcohol would also be banned and women would be required to wear headscarves, among other things.
