Prior to announcing in Israel his platform to withdraw from more Judea and Samaria settlements, Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert briefed the United States on his plan to create Israel’s final borders by 2010. Olmert received American backing, which was critical in his decision to go public with the plan. “They neither approved nor objected to it,” said Olmert’s spokesman Asaf Shariv. Olmert’s plan calls for the evacuation of more settlements in Judea and Samaria. The US supports negotiations on the settlements, but not unilateral withdrawal as was done in the Gaza Strip last summer.
