Construction on E1 police station begins just before elections

Tuesday, March 14, 2006 |
Construction workers began building the E1 police station, the area which connects the Jerusalem suburb of Ma’aleh Adumim to Jerusalem. The work on the site began two weeks before the national elections, which is said to keep the right-wing voters from leaving Kadima for the Likud or other right-wing parties. Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is also scheduled to visit the settlement of Ariel on Tuesday, which he has said will remain an integral part of Israel. The roads and all necessary infrastructures for the police station have been ready for nearly three years. “This is not considered settlement construction and as such our understanding is that the US will not oppose it,” one diplomatic official said. From the time the construction began, no official US statement has been made on the matter
