Government may keep illegal outposts

Tuesday, March 21, 2006 |
The government is considering legalizing some illegal Jewish outposts that fall within settlements that Israel intends to keep. Israel will keep the outposts if they serve a clear security need such as guarding road access to larger settlements. The initial “outpost plan” was brought to the Defense Ministry in an attempt to appease settlers and strengthen settler leadership. Some settler leaders have agreed to voluntarily leave up to 100 outposts if others became authorized. Some of the outposts could include those near Ofra and Beit El near Ramallah. However, according to the Road Map outposts set up after Prime Minister Ariel Sharon established his first government must be dismantled.
