Bird flu contained, but human infection possible

Tuesday, March 21, 2006 |

After the Agriculture Ministry destroyed hundreds of infected birds, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday that there is a possibility of people contracting the Avian Bird Flu. Yet, they confirmed that there is no immediate danger of a nation-wide epidemic at this time. “I won’t be surprised if one or two people contract bird flu, God forbid, but at the moment we are not talking about a human pandemic," Ministry of Health Director-General Avi Yisraeli. So far 6,000 portions of Tamiflu, the drug used to treat bird flu, has been released. Even though the bird flu virus is spreading in farms throughout southern Israel, the Ministry of Agriculture is continuing its operations to dispose of the infected birds.
