More than 100 birds found dead in central Israel

Wednesday, March 22, 2006 |
More than 100 birds were found dead in the Sharon region between Moshav Porat and Kibbutz Zoran on Wednesday morning. Some of the dead birds underwent testing to see if they were infected by the deadly Avian Bird Flu virus. “We made a mistake in handling the birds' carcasses, and from now on, we kill and bury,” Agriculture Minister Ze’ev Boim said. The bird flu was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of birds in southern Negev farms found earlier this week. Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has created a committee to present recommendations on the spreading virus. If the population becomes infected, the Health Ministry said it is prepared to treat only 7 percent of the population.
