Rabbi: sex before marriage permissible if kosher

Thursday, March 23, 2006 |
While sex before marriage is forbidden according to Jewish law, a recent academic article by Professor Zvi Zohar of Bar Ilan University has made it a debatable hot topic. Zohar said that sex before marriage is permissible within religious Zionist circles if the relationship is based on mutual respect and the woman immerses herself in the mikve (ritual bath). Zohar argues that Jewish young men and women committed to keeping Jewish law can channel their hormones into kosher sex, without marital obligations. While the article has sparked major interest, rabbis of yeshivas believe more religious adults will engage in sexual intercourse before marriage.
