Kadima big winner, Labor second, Likud slides to fourth

Wednesday, March 29, 2006 |

Exit polls show Kadima winning large with more than 30 Knesset seats while Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud crashed. Perhaps the biggest news of the election is Avigdor Lieberman's Israel Our Home party, which seemingly displaced Likud and has become the third largest party in Israel, winning 14 seats according to polls. Lieberman already had his eyes on the next election. "I'm certain that next time we will be Israel's ruling party," he said. Knesset Member Yuri Shtern, also with Israel Our Home, told israel today, "I think we wil take the place of Likud." He also didn't rule out a coalition with Kadima despite Ehud Olmert's platform calling for more withdrawals from settlements. "I don't think their platform will be what Olmert has presented." David Rotem, of Israel Our Home told israel today, that "the majority of the Israeli people said, 'No' to disengagement," explaining that both Labor and Kadima together, didn't earn half of the 120 Knesset seats. Election Day was characterized by an unusually low voter turnout rate, 63.2 percent.
