Palestinians fire Katyusha rockets into Israel

Wednesday, March 29, 2006 |
Palestinian terrorist organization Islamic Jihad fired a rocket from the Gaza Strip into Israel, just south of Ashkelon for the first time on Tuesday. The Israeli Army fears that terror groups have obtained additional weapons in Gaza. The Katyusha rockets, unlike the Kassams, have a range of close to 20 km. (12.4 miles) and can carry over 20 kg. (44 lbs.) of explosives. Military officials believe the rocket was smuggled into Gaza through the Egyptian border. It traveled only 5.5 km. due to a faulty launch, but was larger than those fired by Hezbollah in northern Israel. “With global Jihad camps based in Egypt, it was only a matter of time before the Palestinians got their hands on Katyusha rockets and other weaponry,” one senior Israeli army official said.
