Hamas sworn into office, threatens violence

Thursday, March 30, 2006 |

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas swore in 24 cabinet members on Wednesday as Hamas took office. Soon after, Canada announced that it was suspending its aid. More countries are expected to follow. The United States said it will look for ways to send humanitarian aid, but said it will not provide funds to a terrorist organization. Hamas faces an economically tough situation with an international aid boycott. Nevertheless, it has said it will continue to carry out violent attacks against Israel. One Hamas spokesman warned Israel against setting up borders unilaterally. If it did, Hamas would revert to “armed resistance.” Hamas believes the Palestinians have the right to resist Israel.
