Televangelist John Hagee announced to Jewish leaders from more than 52 organizations that 40 million evangelical Christians in the United States support his plan to launch a pro-Christian lobby, which will support Israel and American Jews. Hagee said his group, Christians United for Israel, would be more powerful than the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a large pro-Israel lobby and would target senators and congressmen in Washington. One-fourth of the congressmen are evangelicals or represent regions with a large evangelical population. Rabbi James Rudin said, “Hagee has been known for many years as an enthusiastic advocate of Israel, and is a typical right-wing Christian supporter of the country.” Hagee said he would lead a delegation of 500 evangelicals slated to visit Israel this summer.
