Five dead, dozens injured from April showers

Monday, April 03, 2006 |

April began with torrential rains pounding the country which killed five people and injured several others. In the north, three women from the same family were driving when they lost control of the car and collided with another vehicle. All occupants were taken by military helicopter to Hebrew University’s Hadassah Hospital. The women died later in the hospital. Another woman perished when her car was swept into the Mei Ami River near Wadi Ara while a Palestinian drowned in the floodwaters. Police evacuated elderly from their cars at flooded junctions and families from their homes after walls began to collapse. The infrastructure damage is estimated at millions of shekels. The Sea of Galilee, Israel’s main water source, rose 1.5 cm. over the past 24 hours.
