Olmert named interim prime minister

Tuesday, April 11, 2006 |
Newly elected Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who was initially given the role of acting prime minister, was named interim prime minister. The position will take effect Friday night. The Cabinet reached an agreement on Tuesday after Prime Minster Ariel Sharon was unanimously declared, “permanently unable to exercise his duties.” The end of Sharon’s premiership came, in accordance with Israeli law, 100 days after he suffered a stroke on Jan. 4. Sharon’s condition has not changed and he remains hospitalized at Hadassah University Hospital in a coma. His physicians are preparing to move him to another facility for long-term care. Olmert will carry this new title until he is formally sworn in as prime minister.
