American Jews not attending shul

Less than one in six American Jews attends weekly services, according to a recent Gallup poll, putting Jews second to last in weekly worship attendance. “If things continue as they are we will produce a generation of Jews who will be irretrievably lost,” said Rabbi David Wolpe of Sinai Temple in Los Angeles. Rabbi Gary Zola in Cincinnati said the survey accurately reflected worship attendance, but that “There is great vitality in American Jewry. … There are many different ways that you can legitimately wish to express yourself as a Jew and be involved in various aspects of the Jewish civilization, the Jewish communal experience." Approximately 44 percent of Americans reported attending services weekly or almost weekly. Almost two-thirds of Mormons and Protestants said they attended weekly services.
