Israelis to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day at Yad Vashem

Monday, April 24, 2006 |
Israel will mark Holocaust Remembrance Day this evening in a state ceremony at Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem. This year’s theme will reflect “Humanity in the Shadow of Death.” Israel’s leaders are expected to attend the ceremony while six Holocaust survivors who were active in Zionist youth movements will light the six torches in memory of the 6 million Jews killed during the Holocaust. At 10 a.m. on Tuesday, a two-minute siren will sound throughout the country as Israelis will take a moment of silence to remember. Member of Knesset Shimon Peres will lead the 20th annual March of the Living in Poland where more than 8,000 Jewish teenagers from around the world are expected to march from Auschwitz to Birkenau. Various memorials will be held throughout the country with government leaders present.
