Court may close road through security fence

Wednesday, April 26, 2006 |
After 82 attempts by suicide bombers to enter Israel through the gaps in the security fence surrounding Jerusalem since the beginning of 2006, Israel wants to close another checkpoint despite the request of petitioners to keep it open. Closure would force Palestinians to drive to another checkpoint that is further away. But Orit Koren of the State Attorney's Office argued that the checkpoint be closed for security reasons. Only 330 kilometers (206 miles) of the security barrier is finished, less than half of the total route. Last week, a Palestinian passed through one of the breaches in the Jerusalem barrier and reached Tel Aviv, where he blew himself up outside a shwarma stand, killing nine and wounding dozens more.
