Israel presents its “cool” side

Thursday, April 27, 2006 |
For years, Israeli officials have invited foreign journalists to show them the Western Wall and the Knesset and to introduce them to people who explain how hard it is to live in Israel. This year, the Foreign Ministry has decided to show foreign journalists another side of Israel. A delegation of American journalists that will be arriving soon includes 10 young reporters who work for MTV, Seventeen, Cosmogirl, and Metropolitan News to name a few. They will be taken to Tel Aviv’s hottest bars and clubs; a visit to Beit Yanai beach to meet a famous Israeli surfer; a tour of Safed to participate in Kabbalah workshops; and the Rosh Pina home that popstar Madonna is looking into buying. Jerusalem’s clubs and museums are on the schedule too. “We want them to internalize that Israel is a progressive place, modern and youthful, that in its essence is similar to the United States," said Zehavit Ben-Hillel, of the Foreign Ministry. “Our hope is that every one of them will find ideas for articles here on the ‘other Israel.’”
