Ultra-Orthodox destroy Internet café; riot against Memorial Day

Tuesday, May 02, 2006 |
Several ultra-Orthodox Jews went on violent rampages on Monday night, one against a Jerusalem Internet café and another in Jerusalem against Memorial Day. The rioting crowd shattered the glass doors of the Internet cage, went in and broke the computers and the cash register, claiming place incites haredi community to commit sins. "They have been harassing us for six months since most of the customers here are ultra-orthodox," said Max, who works at the café. While the rest of Israel mourned its fallen soldiers, a few dozen ultra-Orthodox rioted in Jerusalem setting garbage cans and dumpsters on fire and blocking traffic. Police said the demonstration was prompted by Memorial Day. In the past, ultra-Orthodox have staged demonstrations on Memorial Day.
