Friday Feature: Flying the Friendly Skies

Friday, May 12, 2006 |
After agreeing to a modest proposal, two leading rabbis bought all the first class tickets on an El Al flight so they could have a female- and movie-free flight overseas.

The Gerrer Rebbe, Rabbi Yakov Arieh Alter (photo), a Hassidic leader and Rabbi Aharon Leib Steinman, 93, will fly abroad on Sunday in modest style after the Israeli airline El Al complied with the rabbis’ request. Only male stewards will look after these special passengers.

Both rabbis will fly in a historic journey to visit American Jewish communities. The journey has been exciting the ultra-Orthodox public for six months as it involves the rare cooperation of the two spiritual leaders. The rabbis will visit Jewish communities along the west coast where the Jewish community is eagerly awaiting their arrival.

The two asked that the flight from Israel adhere to the strictest standards of modesty. Their aides agreed with El Al officials that they will not have to see women during flight.

The rabbis bought all first class tickets on the flight to make sure no businesswomen are on board.

It was also decided that no films will be shown during the flight and the backs of first class seats will be covered with plastic so that the rabbis won't even have to see the television screens.

With this you can see that El Al really is the unique airline of the Jewish people.
