Hamas announced on Wednesday the activation of a new security unit comprised of terrorists, despite a veto by Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas. Jamal Abu Samhadanah of the Palestinian Resistance Committee is to head the unit and is high on Israel’s wanted list. The creation of the security force came hours after terrorists were killed in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday heightening tensions between Hamas and Abbas’ Fatah Party. Security operations have been the key area of dispute between the two struggling powers even though Abbas carries the title commander of security forces. In defiance to Abbas’ veto, Interior Minister Said Siam said, “In line with my authority, I announce the beginning of the work of the executive unit that was formed recently to protect the security of the citizens and their property.”
