IDF: One more year to complete security fence

Wednesday, May 17, 2006 |
Israel began constructing the security fence of the West Bank nearly four years ago, but has completed only 42 percent of the planned structure and will take nearly one more year to complete, military officials said. Israel Defense Forces officials said that delays are not due to budgetary or technical reasons, but are waiting on the Supreme Court’s decision regarding settlements in Samaria. The sections of the fence still not completed are “temporarily blocked” with barbed wire and no surveillance or alarm equipment. According to the Defense Ministry only 336 kilometers (208 miles) are operational, while another 102 kilometers are in the construction stages (63 miles). The remaining 285 kilometers (177 miles) is waiting for court approval. To see more on the fence construction see a full report in israel today, May 2006.
