Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Vice Premier Shimon Peres met with Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday at an international economic summit in Egypt’s Sharm El-Sheikh. During a 45-minute meeting, Abbas told Livni that it is necessary for the two sides to resume peace talks. Livni said the internationally backed roadmap peace plan is still in effect and reiterated that Hamas must not gain international recognition. “It is a terrorist government,” she said. “On the other hand we want to help the Palestinian people and not to punish them. This was part of the discussion.” Abbas and Livni want to continue talks rather than meet with Hamas.
