Hebrew U president: Not to take ‘Jewishness’ for granted

Tuesday, May 23, 2006 |
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s President Menahem Magidor warned that Israel’s Jewishness should not be taken for granted. He said that the university’s main mission is to ensure Jewish continuity. “It is not realistic to expect Jewish continuity to survive on observance,” he said. “Jewish continuity depends on Jewish knowledge and Jewish unity.” Magidor said that the difference between Jewish unity and Jewish uniformity was that he could be a great heretic, but that he should not be ignorant. Jewish continuity he said should be based on Jewish knowledge and Jewish understanding. Magidor spoke at the launch of the new Gandel Institute for Adult Learning.
