Celebrating the 39th anniversary of reunification of Jerusalem

Thursday, May 25, 2006 |

With parades, prayers and lots of traffic on the city streets, Jerusalemites began celebrating Jerusalem Day on Wednesday evening, as they commemorated the 39th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem. During the Six Days War in 1967, Israel took back her holy ancient capital after 2,000 years of exile when it was restored to the Jews. The city was divided after the War of Independence in 1948. The Jordanians annexed the eastern half of the city and Jews were forbidden from praying at the Western Wall. When paratroopers landed in the Old City, tears filled their eyes, and Colonel Mordechai Gur said, “Har HaBayit b’yadenu! – The Temple Mount is in our hands!”
